Prunadelica is Glenn Howard: an RHS-qualified gardener based in Cliftonville who designs, plants and looks after gardens across Margate and Thanet. The aim is always the same — a garden that grows into itself, needs less each year, and gives something back to the bees, the birds and the people who sit in it.

A wild, naturalistic softener to the clean lines of the garden room
Still a lot of height to come with the taller grasses and perennials such as the Veronicastrum, fennel and Digitalis, but already plenty of early promise. This garden is only a few weeks old; over the years self-seeding will be encouraged to create a wild, naturalistic softener to the clean lines of the garden room and pavers.
The Rudbeckia are doing their best to steal the show — one of the client’s must-have plants, planted in succession from the top of the garden down to the bottom. Their seedheads are brilliant in winter too, when the petals drop and we’re left with the black central cone.
I designed, planted and will continue to look after this garden — from the initial meeting to the aftercare.

A visit to see the soil, the light and the wind, and to talk through ideas. For planting design this becomes a plan and a plant list; for garden care, a rhythm of visits that suits the garden.

I do the planting myself and, if you would like, carry on caring for the garden as it settles in — so the design is nurtured by the person who drew it.

Ask a questionWhich areas do you cover?
Margate and Cliftonville first, then Broadstairs, Ramsgate, Westgate and the rest of Thanet. Most visits are by bicycle, so for anywhere further afield it is worth asking — bigger planting projects can be arranged.
Do you do one-off tidy-ups as well as regular care?
Yes. Plenty of gardens start with a proper cut-back and clear-out to get things under control again, and then settle into occasional or regular visits from there.
What does ‘sustainable’ actually mean here?
Peat-free compost and home-made mulch, no chemical weedkillers or pesticides, plants chosen to suit the soil and the coast so they need less water and feeding, and planting that supports bees, birds and insects through the year.
Do you design gardens as well as plant them?
Yes — planting design is a big part of the work. It usually starts with a walk round the garden, then a plan and plant list, then sourcing and planting. Hard landscaping is done with trusted local landscapers when a project needs it.
Can you look after a garden you designed?
That is the ideal. Aftercare in the first couple of years makes the biggest difference to how a new planting scheme establishes, and it means the garden is looked after by the person who planned it.
